How to register a drone in Thailand
It is a 3 step process to register a drone in Thailand.
Step 1: Purchase a drone insurance
- Get a quote:
Obtain various insurance quotes (e.g. AA Insure). - Buy the insurance:
Choose a suitable insurance policy with cover of at least 1 million baht. Make sure that the policy is in English and meets the requirements of CAAT. - Submit proof of insurance:
Submit proof of insurance to CAAT before applying for the permit.
Step 2: Obtain approval from the CAAT
- Register:
Visit the CAAT website and register as a user. - Drone register:
Click on “drone register” and accept the terms and conditions. - enter data:
Enter all requested data about the drone and your personal data. - Upload documents:
Upload the self-declaration, your passport, drone insurance and photos of the drone. - Waiting for approval:
Regularly check the status of your application on the website. Approval usually takes up to 15 working days and is valid for two years.
Step 3: Obtain authorization from the NBTC
- Register:
Visit the NBTC website and register with your e-mail address. - Login:
Log in with the password you received. - enter data:
Enter your personal details and the address of your first hotel in Thailand. - Register drone:
Enter the serial number, make and model of the drone and photos of the drone and controller. Upload photos of your passport and entry stamp. - Pay:
Pay a fee of 214 THB online or at a bank. After successful payment, you will receive the permit by email.
Fraught with Pitfalls
What sounds so simple here in the list of single steps is actually fraught with pitfalls. For every mistake, a few days pass during which the submitted documents are checked by the Thai authorities NBTC and CAAT.
Only a few explanations are given in the error messages. It usually says something like “Document incorrect”. And only the first error is indicated. This means that even if this is corrected, the PDF document still generates an error message.
